Figma is a collaborative interface design tool from Figma, Inc. Its desktop app is available for macOS, Windows and Windows on Arm, with a free plan and paid plans for teams.
Figma is where many product teams design app screens and websites together, with several people editing the same file at once. It runs in a web browser, but the desktop app gives Figma its own window and tabs, and makes your locally installed fonts available.
What designers use Figma for
- Interface design: Frames, auto layout and components for building app and website screens.
- Prototyping: Link screens together and click through a flow as if it were a real app.
- Design systems: Shared libraries of components and styles that keep a product consistent.
- Real-time collaboration: Comments and multiplayer editing, so designers, developers and clients look at the same file.
Download the desktop app
- The Download button opens Figma’s official downloads page.
- Choose the version for macOS, Windows or Windows on Arm and install it.
- Sign in with your Figma account, or create one; your files are stored in the cloud.
The same page offers the Figma font installer (also built into the desktop app), mobile apps for iOS, iPad and Android to view prototypes, and beta builds. There is no Linux desktop app, but Figma works in a browser on Linux.
Plans
You can start on Figma’s free plan, which has limits on files and features. Paid plans add more files, team libraries and advanced features, and are priced per editor. Check figma.com/pricing for the current limits before you plan a team project.
For quick social graphics from templates, Canva is simpler. For vector artwork, Inkscape is a free desktop option.
Pros
- Real-time collaboration on the same file
- Free plan to start
- Desktop app gives access to local fonts
Cons
- Files live in the cloud, so you need to be online
