BleachBit is a free and open-source disk space cleaner and privacy tool. It has an installer for Windows 10 and 11 and .deb and .rpm packages for popular Linux distributions; macOS support is experimental with limited features.
Browsers, system caches and applications collect temporary files over time. BleachBit finds and removes them to free disk space and clear traces such as cookies and history.
What BleachBit cleans
- Browsers: Cache, cookies, history and other data, cleaner by cleaner.
- System: Temporary files, logs and other leftovers.
- Applications: Many programs have their own cleaners in the list.
- Shredder: Overwrite specific files before deleting them.
- Wipe free space: Overwrite space where deleted files used to be.
Installing it
- The Download button opens the official download page on bleachbit.org.
- Windows users get an installer for Windows 10 and 11; Linux users can choose .deb or .rpm packages for popular distributions.
- The Windows installer is digitally signed, and the project publishes signed checksums if you want to verify the file.
Clean carefully
Deleted data cannot be recovered, so back up anything important before your first cleaning. Tick only the cleaners you understand; some options remove saved passwords, sessions or settings rather than just cache. Use Preview first to see what would be removed and how much space you would gain, then run Clean.
About shredding and SSDs
BleachBit’s documentation explains that a single overwrite pass is used, and that on SSDs shredding and wiping free space are best-effort rather than guaranteed, with frequent wiping adding wear. Wiping free space takes a long time and does not give you more free space. If your drive already uses full-disk encryption such as BitLocker, the documentation says wiping free space is not necessary.
Pros
- Free and open source
- Preview shows what will be removed
- Windows and Linux versions
Cons
- Some cleaners remove saved logins and settings
- Deleted data cannot be recovered
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I undo a BleachBit cleaning?
No. Removed files are gone, which is why a backup and a Preview run before cleaning are recommended.
Should I wipe free space on an SSD?
BleachBit's documentation calls it best-effort on SSDs and notes that frequent wiping adds wear. With full-disk encryption it is not necessary.
