Ableton Live is a music creation program for Windows and macOS, sold in Intro, Standard and Suite editions. Ableton offers a free trial of Live 12 from its website.

2 min read

Ableton Live is built around two views: a linear arrangement timeline like most recording programs, and a Session View of clips you can launch in any order. That second view is why many electronic musicians and DJs also use it on stage.

Three editions

Live 12 is sold as Intro, Standard and Suite. Ableton’s shop lists them at 99, 349 and 749 US dollars, and it also offers a rent-to-own plan for Suite over 24 monthly payments. Prices can change, so confirm on the shop page before you buy.

What Live 12 adds

  • MIDI Transformations and Generators: Tools that reshape patterns or suggest melodies, chords and rhythms.
  • Max for Live support: Extra devices for deeper MIDI work.
  • Free updates inside Live 12: Ableton describes 12.4 as a free update for all Live 12 users.

Trying it first

The site has a Try Live 12 for free link. The page does not spell out the trial terms, so read them when you sign up.
