Mp3tag is a metadata editor for audio files by Florian Heidenreich. The current Windows version is 3.36.1, which runs on Windows 7 to 11; a separate paid Mac version is offered with a 7-day free trial.
Music files collected over the years often have wrong artist names, missing album covers or file names like “Track01.mp3”. Mp3tag fixes all of this, for one file or a few thousand at a time.
What Mp3tag can do
- Batch tag editing: Write ID3v1.1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, MP4, WMA, APEv2 tags and Vorbis Comments to many files at once.
- Cover art: Download album covers and add them to your files.
- Online lookups: Import tags from databases such as Discogs, MusicBrainz and freedb instead of typing them.
- Renaming: Rename files based on their tags, or fill in tags from file names.
- Replace text: Swap characters or words in tags and file names, with regular expression support.
- Playlists: Create and manage playlists automatically while editing.
It works with a wide range of formats, including MP3, FLAC, AIFF and many others listed on the official site.
Downloading Mp3tag
- The Download button opens the official download page on mp3tag.de.
- Choose the 64-bit setup (about 5.73 MB), which also runs on ARM64 devices, or the 32-bit setup.
- Run the installer. Older builds for Windows XP, Vista and earlier are still listed on the same page.
Getting started
Open the folder that holds an album, select all the files and edit the fields in the panel on the left. To fill everything in at once, use a tag source such as Discogs or MusicBrainz, choose the matching release and confirm.
