Equalizer APO is a free, open-source parametric and graphic equalizer for Windows that works system-wide as an Audio Processing Object. The current version is 1.4.2; it is distributed on SourceForge.

2 min read

Headphones that sound too boomy, laptop speakers with no bass or a microphone that needs a little cleaning up: Windows has very few built-in tools for this. Equalizer APO adds an equalizer that applies to all sound on the system, whatever program is playing it.

What makes it different

Equalizer APO is installed as an Audio Processing Object (APO), so it sits inside the Windows audio system rather than in a single player. Its strengths, as listed by the project:

  • A virtually unlimited number of filters
  • Works on any number of channels
  • Very low latency, suitable for interactive use such as games and calls
  • Low CPU usage
  • VST plugin support
  • Integration with Voicemeeter

Installing it correctly

  1. The Download button opens the project page on SourceForge, where the installer is hosted.
  2. Run the setup and follow the instructions.
  3. Near the end, the Configurator opens. Select the audio device you want to process, such as your speakers or headphones. This step matters: if the wrong device is selected, you will hear no change.
  4. Allow Windows to restart.

After the restart, the equalizer is active. The documentation mentions that you may notice a slightly lower volume and a mild bass boost from the default settings.

Where the settings live

Equalizer APO reads its main configuration file, config.txt, from the config folder in its installation directory (by default C:\Program Files\EqualizerAPO\config). This is where the equalizer settings are kept.

If you later add new headphones or a USB sound card, run the Configurator again and select the new device.

Pros

  • Applies to all sound on the system
  • Very low latency and CPU usage
  • Supports VST plugins

Cons

  • Windows only
  • Device selection during setup confuses some users

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Equalizer APO have no effect after installing?

Usually the wrong audio device was selected in the Configurator, or Windows was not restarted. Open the Configurator, select the device you are actually using and restart.

Does Equalizer APO work with games and voice chat?

Yes. It processes all system audio with very low latency, which the project describes as suitable for interactive applications.
