Recording a podcast, trimming a section out of a song or reducing the hiss on an old recording: for jobs like these, Audacity has been the go-to free recommendation for years.

What can you do with Audacity?

  • Record: Capture audio straight from a microphone or your sound card’s input.
  • Cut and combine: Select part of the waveform to cut or copy it, and layer several clips on separate tracks.
  • Effects: Built-in effects include noise reduction, amplify, normalize, and speed and pitch changes.
  • Export: Save your work as MP3, WAV, FLAC or OGG.

How to download and install

  1. The Download button opens the official download page on audacityteam.org.
  2. The 64-bit Windows installer is about 50 MB; the macOS and Linux versions are on the same page.
  3. After installing, choose your microphone under Edit > Preferences > Devices.

Good to know

For noise reduction to work well, first select a few seconds that contain only background noise and capture a “noise profile”. While you are still editing, save in Audacity’s own project format; exporting is for the finished file.

Pros

  • Free and ad-free
  • Multi-track editing and built-in effects
  • Same interface on Windows, macOS and Linux

Cons

  • Fewer real-time effect options than professional audio software
  • Noise reduction needs some tuning
