2 min read

Whether you are writing a song for your band, arranging a piece for a school choir or simply copying out a melody, MuseScore Studio turns notes into clean, printable sheet music and plays them back to you.

What you can do

  • Write scores: Enter notes with a mouse, a computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard.
  • Listen back: Hear your score played through the built-in sounds; the optional Muse Sounds library offers more realistic instruments.
  • Share and exchange: Move scores to and from other programs using MusicXML, MIDI and other formats.
  • Use it without limits: The program is completely free, with no locked features.

Installing MuseScore Studio

  1. The Download button opens the official download page on musescore.org.
  2. Windows and macOS: The main button installs MuseScore Studio through MuseHub, the official distributor of the program and of Muse Sounds. MuseHub needs Windows 10 or later, or macOS 12 or later.
  3. Without MuseHub: If you only want the notation program, use the link for the version without MuseHub (an MSI file on Windows, a DMG on Mac).
  4. Linux: Download the AppImage, available for x64 and ARM64. Distribution packages exist too, but they are often older.

Getting comfortable

Create a new score, choose your instruments and start entering notes. The official handbook and forum on musescore.org answer most beginner questions, and the program is translated into many languages.

Older versions of MuseScore Studio remain available on the download page if you need one for an existing project.

Pros

  • Completely free with no limitations
  • MusicXML and MIDI import and export
  • Large community and handbook

Cons

  • The default installer also installs MuseHub
  • Realistic Muse Sounds are a large extra download

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need MuseHub to use MuseScore Studio?

No. MuseHub is the recommended way to install it together with Muse Sounds, but the download page also offers MuseScore Studio on its own without MuseHub.

Can MuseScore Studio open MusicXML and MIDI files?

Yes. It can import and export MusicXML and MIDI, which makes it easy to exchange scores with other notation programs.
