2 min read

TeamViewer has long been a common name in remote support. IT teams use it to fix colleagues’ PCs, and many people use it to help family members with their computers.

Key features

  • Remote control: See and operate another computer’s screen as if you were sitting in front of it.
  • File transfer: Move files between the two computers during a session.
  • Unattended access: Reach your own computers without someone accepting each connection.
  • Mobile support: Connect from a phone, or help someone on their Android device.

Getting TeamViewer

  1. The Download button opens TeamViewer’s official download page.
  2. Choose your operating system: Windows, macOS and Linux are supported, plus Android and iOS apps.
  3. During installation, say whether you will use it personally or commercially. Choose honestly; this affects the license.
  4. To connect, enter the partner’s TeamViewer ID and, when asked, the password or confirmation they give you.

For someone who only needs to receive help, TeamViewer also offers a lighter “QuickSupport” style module that does not require a full installation.

Free for personal use only

TeamViewer is free for private, non-commercial use. Using it for work, including supporting customers or colleagues, requires a paid license. TeamViewer may limit free sessions if it detects commercial use.

Be wary of strangers

Never give your ID and password to someone who called or messaged you out of the blue. Real banks and software companies do not ask you to install remote access tools.

AnyDesk and the free Chrome Remote Desktop are alternatives worth comparing.

Pros

  • Mature remote support tool
  • File transfer and unattended access
  • Available on desktop and mobile

Cons

  • Free use is limited to personal, non-commercial purposes
  • Paid licenses are expensive for small offices

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did TeamViewer say commercial use was suspected?

The free version is for personal use only. If usage looks commercial, TeamViewer may restrict free sessions; businesses need a paid license.

Does the other person need TeamViewer too?

Yes. Both sides need TeamViewer, although the person receiving help can use a lighter module instead of the full installation.
