Sublime Text is known for opening quickly and staying responsive, even with large files. Web developers use it to edit HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP, and site owners use it for quick fixes to templates and configuration files.

Features web developers use

  • Multiple selections: Rename a variable or change many lines at once.
  • Goto Anything, Goto Definition and Goto Symbol in Project: Jump around a codebase with a few keystrokes.
  • Context-aware auto complete, including TypeScript, JSX and TSX support.
  • GPU rendering and native builds for Apple Silicon and Linux ARM64.

Installing Sublime Text

  1. The Download button opens the official Sublime Text download page.
  2. Choose the build for Windows, macOS or Linux.
  3. To register, enter your licence key from the Help menu.

Evaluation and licensing, honestly

Sublime HQ’s store states that Sublime Text may be downloaded and evaluated for free, however a licence must be purchased for continued use. There is no fixed trial deadline in the app, but the licence terms still apply.

  • Personal licence: a one-time purchase for an individual, including three years of updates; after that you can buy an upgrade to keep receiving new versions.
  • Business licence: for organisations, a yearly subscription per seat ($65 per seat per year for the first 10 seats and $50 per seat for further seats, according to the store page).

If you need a free editor, Visual Studio Code and, on Windows, Notepad++ are both free.

Pros

  • Very fast, even with large files
  • Multiple selections and Goto Anything
  • Personal licence includes three years of updates

Cons

  • Continued use requires a paid licence
  • Business use is a yearly per-seat subscription
