Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web and replies with cited sources. It is available on the web and as official apps, with a free tier and paid Pro plans.

2 min read

Perplexity sits somewhere between a search engine and a chatbot. You ask a question, it searches the web, and you get a written answer with numbered sources you can click. That makes it easy to check where a claim came from, which is the main reason people use it for research and quick fact-finding.

Where to get it

  • Web: Use Perplexity in any browser without installing anything.
  • Mobile apps: Official apps are listed in the Perplexity help center for iPhone and Android.
  • Desktop app and Comet: Perplexity’s help center also has sections for a desktop app and for Comet, its own browser. Their availability and system support are described on those official pages.

The Download button opens Perplexity’s official site, and you can follow the app links from there. Be careful with unofficial “Perplexity” apps and extensions in stores.

What you can do

  • Ask with sources: Answers come with citations so you can open the original pages.
  • Follow-up questions: Keep refining in the same thread instead of starting a new search.
  • Focus on a topic: Narrow searches, for example toward academic material, depending on the options on offer.
  • Upload files: Ask questions about documents and images when your plan supports it.

Free and paid

Perplexity has a free tier. Paid Pro plans exist and give access to more advanced models and higher usage; the exact list of benefits and prices is on Perplexity’s plan pages and changes from time to time.

Tips for better answers

Write your question the way you would explain it to a person, include the time frame or place when it matters, and open at least one cited source for anything important. An answer engine can still summarize a source badly, so the citations are the part worth verifying.

If you want a general-purpose chat assistant instead, compare it with ChatGPT.

Pros

  • Every answer comes with cited sources
  • Free tier available
  • Good for quick research

Cons

  • Advanced models and higher usage need a paid plan
  • Still needs you to verify important claims

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Perplexity need an account?

You can start asking questions without much setup, but an account is needed to keep your history and to use paid features.

How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT?

Perplexity is built around searching the web and citing sources in every answer. ChatGPT is a general assistant that can also search, but sources are not its central design.
