Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant. It is available as an app for Windows, Android and iOS and on the web, and it can be used with a Microsoft account. Paid Microsoft plans add more.
Microsoft Copilot is the AI assistant Microsoft builds into Windows, Edge, the Microsoft 365 apps and its own website. For most people the simplest way in is the Copilot app on a PC or phone. It answers questions, drafts text, summarizes pages and helps with ideas, and it ties in naturally with other Microsoft products such as Microsoft Edge.
How to get Copilot
- Windows: Recent Windows 11 versions include the Copilot app. If it is missing, open the Microsoft Store and search for Copilot.
- Android and iOS: Install Copilot from Google Play or the App Store, and make sure the publisher is Microsoft.
- Web: Open the Copilot website in any browser; nothing needs to be installed.
The Download button leads to Microsoft’s official Copilot page, which links to every version.
What can you do with it?
- Ask and chat: Get answers, explanations and step-by-step help in plain language.
- Write and rewrite: Draft emails, social posts or summaries and adjust the tone.
- Work with images: Describe a picture to create one, or ask about a photo you upload.
- Talk to it: Voice mode lets you speak instead of typing.
Features differ by device, region and account type, so what you see may not match another person’s screen.
Free or paid?
Copilot can be used for free with a Microsoft account. Microsoft also sells paid plans and Microsoft 365 subscriptions that include extra Copilot features, and business versions managed by an organization’s administrator exist too. Look at Microsoft’s own pages for the current plan list, because the packaging has changed several times.
Good habits
Treat answers as a starting point, double-check facts that matter, and avoid pasting private or work-confidential information into a consumer assistant. If your employer provides a work version of Copilot, use that one for company documents.
Pros
- Built into Windows and Edge
- Free to start with a Microsoft account
- Voice mode and image features
Cons
- Features vary by region and account type
- Needs an internet connection
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Microsoft account to use Copilot?
You can try it on the web without much setup, but signing in with a Microsoft account unlocks more features and keeps your history. The apps encourage you to sign in.
Is the Copilot app the same as Microsoft 365 Copilot?
No. The Copilot app is the general assistant for individuals. Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate paid service that works inside Word, Excel and other Microsoft 365 apps.
