Upscayl is a free, open-source desktop app that uses AI models to enlarge and enhance low-resolution images on your own computer. The latest version is 2.15.0, released on December 25, 2024; it runs on Windows 10+, macOS 12+ and Linux, needs a Vulkan-compatible GPU and is AGPL-3.0 licensed.
Upscayl makes AI upscaling as simple as choosing an image and clicking a button. It uses Real-ESRGAN-based models and Vulkan, so everything happens on your own graphics card and no files are uploaded anywhere.
What does Upscayl do?
- AI upscaling: Enlarges and enhances low-resolution or pixelated images.
- Batch mode: Upscale a whole folder at once, with optional compression or scaling afterwards.
- Custom models: Load additional community models from the project’s custom-models repository.
- GPU choice: Pick which graphics card to use with a GPU ID setting.
- Command-line backend: upscayl-ncnn for scripts.
Note that it cannot fix blurry or out-of-focus photos; it is meant for low-resolution images.
Who is it for?
It suits photographers, designers and anyone who wants sharper, larger images without a subscription or uploading files.
How to install

brew install --cask upscayl
- Linux: AppImage, Flatpak (org.upscayl.Upscayl on Flathub), Snap, RPM, DEB or the AUR package upscayl-bin.
Hardware requirements
- GPU: A Vulkan-compatible graphics card is required.
- Integrated graphics and CPU: Most integrated GPUs and CPU-only setups do not work, although you can try.
- Systems: Windows 10+, macOS 12+ and Linux.
Licensing
Upscayl is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. The Real-ESRGAN models it uses have their own license.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Upscayl work without a graphics card?
Usually not. Upscayl needs a Vulkan-compatible GPU, and the project says it will not work with most integrated GPUs or on the CPU alone.
Can Upscayl fix blurry photos?
No. Upscayl enlarges and sharpens low-resolution images, but it cannot repair photos that are out of focus or motion-blurred.
