Volume Master is a free Chrome extension by Peta Sittek that controls the volume of each browser tab from 0% to 600%, with voice and bass boost options. It is installed from the Chrome Web Store and shows no ads.
Some videos are recorded so quietly that even maximum system volume isn’t enough, while another tab blares an ad at full blast. Volume Master gives each Chrome tab its own volume slider so you can fix both.
Features
- Up to 600% boost: Push a quiet tab well past its normal maximum, or turn it down to zero.
- Per-tab control: Each tab keeps its own level, independent of your system volume.
- Voice boost: Makes dialogue and podcasts easier to follow.
- Bass boost: Adds low end to music.
- Tab switcher: Jump to any tab that is playing audio with one click.
- Dark mode for the pop-up.
The developer describes it as completely free and without ads.
A note on full screen
When any extension processes a tab’s sound, Chrome shows a blue indicator in the tab bar and won’t let the page go fully full screen. That’s a Chrome safety feature, not a bug in the extension. The developer suggests pressing F11 on Windows or Ctrl+Cmd+F on a Mac to get closer to full screen.
Installing it
- Click Download to open Volume Master on the Chrome Web Store.
- Add it to Chrome and pin the icon to the toolbar.
- Open a tab with sound, click the icon and drag the slider.
Very high boost levels can distort audio and are hard on speakers and ears, so raise the level gradually. To keep a video on screen while you work, see Picture-in-Picture Extension.
Pros
- Per-tab volume up to 600%
- Voice and bass boost options
- Free and ad-free
Cons
- Chrome blocks true full screen while audio is processed
- High boost levels can distort sound
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I go fully full screen with Volume Master on?
Chrome keeps a visible indicator on tabs whose audio is being modified by an extension, which blocks true full screen. Pressing F11 on Windows or Ctrl+Cmd+F on a Mac helps.
Does it change my system volume?
No. It only changes the volume of the browser tab you adjust.
