Stable Diffusion WebUI by AUTOMATIC1111 is a free, open-source browser interface for generating and editing images with Stable Diffusion models on your own computer. The latest release is 1.10.1, published on February 9, 2025; it runs on Windows, Linux and macOS and is AGPL-3.0 licensed.
AUTOMATIC1111’s WebUI is the interface that brought Stable Diffusion to a mass audience, and with about 165,000 GitHub stars as of October 2026 it is one of the most-starred AI projects of all. Development has slowed: the last release came out in February 2025. It still works well for classic Stable Diffusion and SDXL models, while newer architectures are better served by tools such as SD.Next or ComfyUI.
What does Stable Diffusion WebUI do?
- Image generation: txt2img and img2img, inpainting, outpainting and a color sketch mode.
- Upscaling and face repair: Built-in GFPGAN, CodeFormer, RealESRGAN, ESRGAN, SwinIR and more.
- Fine-tuning: Textual inversion, hypernetworks, LoRAs and a training tab.
- Prompt tools: Attention weighting, prompt editing and composable prompts with AND.
- Workflow helpers: Generation settings saved in image metadata, X/Y/Z plots, Highres Fix, a checkpoint merger, an API and custom scripts.
Who should use it?
It suits people who want a well-documented, extension-rich interface for Stable Diffusion 1.x, 2.x and SDXL models, backed by a huge community of guides.
How to install
Windows (NVIDIA): Install Python 3.10.6 (tick “Add Python to PATH”) and Git, then download the repository:
git clone https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui.git
Run webui-user.bat from Windows Explorer as a normal user, not as administrator. The first launch downloads its dependencies.
Linux (Debian/Ubuntu): Install the dependencies, then download the launch script into the folder where you want the WebUI:
sudo apt install wget git python3 python3-venv libgl1 libglib2.0-0
wget -q https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui/master/webui.sh
Then run webui.sh. On very new distributions, install Python 3.11 or 3.10 and set python_cmd in webui-user.sh. Apple Silicon Macs have a separate guide in the project wiki.
Hardware requirements
- GPU: NVIDIA cards are recommended. AMD GPUs, Intel CPUs and GPUs, and Ascend NPUs are covered by separate wiki guides.
- VRAM: 4 GB cards are supported, and some users report 2 GB working. Training embeddings needs about 8 GB (6 GB reported to work).
- Python: 3.10.6 on Windows; the README notes that newer Python versions do not support its PyTorch version.
License and models
Stable Diffusion WebUI is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. Models you download have their own licenses.
