Snapchat opens on the camera rather than a feed. The idea is to talk with pictures: snap a photo or short video, add a Lens or a caption and send it to friends, who usually see it once before it disappears.

What’s in Snapchat?

  • Snaps and Chat: Send photos, videos and messages; by default, Snaps and chats are cleared after they are viewed.
  • Lenses and filters: Augmented reality effects that react to your face and surroundings.
  • Stories and Spotlight: Share moments with friends for 24 hours, or watch short videos from the wider community.
  • Snap Map: See friends who choose to share their location; you can also stay hidden with Ghost Mode.
  • Memories: Save the Snaps you want to keep and look back on them later.

Creating your account

  1. Install Snapchat from Google Play or the App Store, or follow the links on snapchat.com.
  2. Sign up with your name, birthday, a username and a phone number or email.
  3. Add friends from your contacts or by username and send your first Snap.

Good to know

In Settings you can choose who can contact you, who sees your Story and whether your location is shared. Parents can use the Family Center to see who their teen is talking to without reading the messages. Snapchat+ is an optional paid subscription with extra features; the core app is free.

Pros

  • Huge choice of creative Lenses
  • Messages cleared by default
  • Ghost Mode and Family Center controls

Cons

  • Interface takes time to learn
  • Some extras need Snapchat+

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Snaps really disappear?

By default, Snaps and chats are deleted after they are viewed, but the recipient can still take a screenshot (Snapchat notifies you) or save a chat.

Can I hide my location on Snap Map?

Yes. Turn on Ghost Mode in the Snap Map settings and your friends will not see where you are.
