simplewall is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) network control tool for Windows by Henry++. It uses the Windows Filtering Platform, blocks all applications by default and runs on Windows 7 SP1 to 11 (64-bit or ARM64); the latest release is 3.8.7.
Windows lets most programs reach the internet without asking. simplewall flips that: once filtering is enabled, every application is blocked until you allow it. The developer describes it as a tool for advanced users, and that is a fair warning.
How it works
simplewall configures the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) directly. It is not a front end for Windows Firewall and does not change its rules; the two work independently.
Features
- Default block: All applications are blocked by default, so you only write allow rules.
- Rules editor: Create global rules or rules for a single program.
- Telemetry blocklist: An internal list for blocking Windows telemetry.
- Notifications and logs: See and log dropped packets (Windows 7 and later) and allowed packets (Windows 8 and later).
- Wide coverage: Handles Windows services, Microsoft Store apps and WSL.
- Portable mode: Create a simplewall.ini file in the program folder to run it without installing.
Getting started
- Click Download to open the official GitHub releases page and pick the installer or the portable archive.
- Run simplewall with administrator rights, which it requires.
- Before enabling filtering, allow the programs you rely on, such as your browser and update services, so you do not cut yourself off.
Requirements
simplewall needs Windows 7 SP1 or later (up to Windows 11), on a 64-bit or ARM64 system with an SSE2-capable processor. Windows 7 also needs updates KB2533623 and KB3063858.
Pros
- Blocks everything until you allow it
- Open source and very small
- Portable mode available
Cons
- Aimed at advanced users
- Easy to block something you need
Frequently Asked Questions
Does simplewall replace Windows Firewall?
Not exactly. simplewall uses the Windows Filtering Platform directly and works independently of Windows Firewall rather than editing its rules.
Why did my programs lose internet access after enabling simplewall?
simplewall blocks all applications by default. Add allow rules for the programs and services that need network access.
