RawTherapee is a free, open-source (GPLv3) raw photo processing program developed by the RawTherapee team. The current version is 5.13, released in July 2026, for Windows, macOS and Linux.
RawTherapee concentrates on one task: turning raw camera files into excellent images. It does not try to be a photo library manager, so it suits photographers who already organize their files elsewhere and want precise control over development.
Strengths
- High-precision engine: A non-destructive, 32-bit floating-point processing engine.
- Demosaicing options: Several modern demosaicing methods, including the option to apply two algorithms to the same image.
- Pixel-shift support: Combine pixel-shift frames with automatic ghost masking.
- Sensor corrections: Dark frame subtraction, flat field correction and hot or dead pixel correction.
- HDR DNG support: Opens High Dynamic Range DNG files.
- Languages: The interface is available in more than 15 languages.
Installing it
- The Download button opens the official RawTherapee downloads page, which lists the latest release first.
- Choose the Windows build, the macOS build or the Linux AppImage.
- Install or launch it, then use the file browser on the left to open a folder of raw files.
Working with RawTherapee
Because processing is non-destructive, your raw files stay untouched. Expect to spend some time learning: the tool panels are dense, and many controls assume you know what demosaicing or white balance curves do.
RawTherapee is released under the GNU GPLv3 and its source code is on GitHub. Older releases remain available on the downloads page if you need a specific version.
Pros
- Very fine control over raw development
- Pixel-shift and sensor correction tools
- Free and open source
Cons
- Dense interface
- Not a full library manager

Only lightly. It has a file browser for picking images, but it focuses on raw processing rather than full catalog management.
Which systems does RawTherapee support?
