darktable is a free, open-source (GPLv3+) photo workflow application and raw developer. The current release is 5.6.2, with installers for Windows (x64 and ARM), Apple silicon Macs on macOS 13.5 or later, and Linux.
Photographers who shoot in raw often look for an alternative to subscription software. darktable is one of the most complete open-source answers: it manages your photo library and develops raw files, all without changing the original images.
Two rooms, one workflow
- Lighttable: Browse, rate and organize your photos in a zoomable view backed by a database.
- Darkroom: Develop a single image with processing modules, from simple crop and exposure to advanced tone and color tools.
Every edit is non-destructive. darktable stores your adjustments separately and only applies them in full when you export, and its floating-point processing pipeline handles high dynamic range data well. It can also shoot tethered, controlling a connected camera from the computer, something few free programs offer.
Picking the right download
- The Download button opens the official install page on darktable.org.
- Windows: Choose the win64 installer for regular PCs or the woa64 installer for Windows on ARM. The site links to known SmartScreen warnings and how to handle them.
- macOS: The DMG is for Apple silicon only and needs macOS 13.5 Ventura or later. There are no official builds for Intel Macs. macOS may block the first launch; the install page explains how to allow it.
- Linux: Use the AppImage (x86_64 or aarch64), your distribution’s packages or the Flatpak. Note that the Flatpak does not include darktable’s AI features.
