Once a photo collection grows past a few thousand files, folders alone stop being enough. digiKam is built for that moment: it catalogs your pictures so you can find them by date, place, tag or camera details.

Organizing tools

  • Albums, tags, ratings and labels: Sort images however you like, without moving the files.
  • Metadata search: Find photos by date, location or embedded EXIF, IPTC and XMP data.
  • Raw files: Opens raw images through the LibRaw library, which covers a very wide range of cameras.

Choosing an installer

  1. Press Download to open the official download page on digikam.org.
  2. Windows: Use the 64-bit installer; Windows 10 or later is required.
  3. macOS: Apple silicon Macs need macOS 11.3 or later. A separate build is offered for Intel Macs running macOS 10.15 or later.
  4. Linux: The 64-bit AppImage needs glibc 2.31 or newer. Distribution packages exist too, but they may lag behind.

The project signs its downloads with GnuPG and publishes the public key, so you can verify a file before installing it. Weekly pre-release builds are also listed, but they are meant for testing, not for your main library.

Before importing everything

Point digiKam at one folder first and let it build its database. Once you are happy with how tags and albums behave, add the rest of your collection. Keep a backup of your photos, as you would with any program that writes metadata.

Pros

  • Handles very large photo libraries
  • Powerful metadata search
  • Signed downloads you can verify

Cons

  • Many options to learn
  • Initial database scan takes time on big collections

Frequently Asked Questions

Which digiKam download should Mac users choose?

Apple silicon Macs use the build for macOS 11.3 or later; Intel Macs use the separate build for macOS 10.15 or later.

Are the Linux distribution packages up to date?

Not always. The digiKam team notes that distribution packages may be outdated and offers an official AppImage instead.
