PuTTY is a free, open-source SSH and Telnet client written by Simon Tatham. The latest release is 0.85, published on August 16, 2026, with installers for 64-bit x86, 64-bit Arm and 32-bit Windows.
Managing a Linux server, a Raspberry Pi or a network switch usually means opening a remote terminal. PuTTY has been the go-to SSH client on Windows for many years: it is small, quick and does exactly what it says.
What’s included?
- PuTTY: The main SSH, Telnet, rlogin and serial console client.
- PuTTYgen: Creates SSH key pairs so you can log in without typing a password.
- Pageant: An SSH agent that keeps your keys loaded during a session.
- PSCP and PSFTP: Command-line tools for copying files over SSH.
Choosing the right MSI
- Simon Tatham’s “latest release” page lists several installers.
- Most PCs need the 64-bit x86 MSI installer; choose the 64-bit Arm one for Arm-based Windows laptops.
- Run the installer, then open PuTTY, type the server’s host name or IP address, leave the port at 22 and click Open.
Good to know
The first time you connect to a server, PuTTY shows its host key fingerprint. Compare it with the fingerprint your server administrator gave you before accepting it. PuTTY’s official home is on chiark.greenend.org.uk; other sites that use the name are not run by the developers.
Pros
- Small and fast
- Includes key generator, SSH agent and file transfer tools
- Free for commercial use
Cons
- Settings dialog looks old-fashioned
- No tabs for multiple sessions
