Minecraft is a sandbox game from Mojang Studios. The PC bundle sold on minecraft.net includes both Java Edition (Windows, macOS, Linux) and Bedrock Edition (Windows) under one Microsoft account purchase.
Minecraft drops you into a world made of blocks with nothing but your hands. You gather wood and stone, craft tools, build a shelter before nightfall and then decide what the game is for: exploring caves, farming, redstone machines, huge builds or a long survival run. There are no levels to finish, which is why people keep playing it years after buying it. If you like open-ended building with a more 2D look, Terraria is a close cousin.
Java or Bedrock?
Mojang sells two versions, and Mojang’s own download page explains the split:
- Java Edition is the original PC-only version, known for mods, custom servers and advanced mechanics. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Bedrock Edition is built for cross-platform play between PC, consoles and phones, and has an in-game marketplace for add-ons.
The two editions do not share servers, so friends need to pick the same one. The PC bundle on minecraft.net contains both, so you do not have to choose up front.
How to get it
- Open the official Minecraft download page from the Download button below.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account; Minecraft is tied to it.
- Buy the PC bundle if you do not own the game yet, then install the Minecraft Launcher and pick Java or Bedrock from its game list.
Things to know before buying
- Minecraft is a paid game with a one-time purchase. Optional marketplace content in Bedrock costs extra.
- Mods are a Java Edition feature; they come from third-party community sites, not from Mojang, so install them with care.
- Mobile versions are sold separately through Google Play and the App Store.
- Multiplayer works through your own server, a community server (Java) or Realms, the subscription server service Mojang runs.
Mojang keeps releasing free updates for both editions, so the game you buy today keeps changing without extra cost.
Pros
- Endless creative and survival play
- Free updates for both editions
- Huge mod and server scene on Java Edition
Cons
- Paid game
- Java and Bedrock servers are not compatible
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Minecraft Java and Bedrock together?
Not on the same server. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different networking, so players on one cannot join the other’s servers directly.
Does the PC bundle include both editions?
Yes. The Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC bundle on minecraft.net lets you play both from the same launcher.
