Autodesk Inventor is paid 3D mechanical design software for parts, assemblies and production drawings. Autodesk offers a 30-day free trial; after that, it requires a subscription, alone or in the Product Design and Manufacturing Collection.

2 min read

Inventor is Autodesk’s professional 3D CAD program for mechanical design. Engineers use it to model parts, build assemblies, check how they move and fit, and produce manufacturing drawings, from single components to complete machines and factory equipment.

Main capabilities

  • Parametric part modelling: sketch-based features driven by dimensions and parameters.
  • Assemblies: constrain parts together, check interference and motion.
  • Drawings: create production-ready 2D drawings from 3D models.
  • iLogic automation: capture design rules so that configurable products can be generated from inputs instead of being modelled by hand.

How to get the trial

  1. The Download button opens the Inventor page on autodesk.com; choose Free trial.
  2. Sign in with an Autodesk account and download the installer.
  3. The trial lasts 30 days.

Licensing

After the trial, Inventor is a subscription product. Autodesk lists a 30-day return policy for annual and multi-year subscriptions and a 15-day policy for monthly ones. Inventor is also part of the Product Design and Manufacturing Collection, which combines it with AutoCAD, Fusion and other tools.

Platform

Inventor is a Windows desktop application. Check Autodesk’s system requirements page for the current release before installing, especially for large assemblies.

The most common comparison for Inventor is SOLIDWORKS. For a free option for personal projects, see Solid Edge Community Edition.
