Avidemux is a free video editor for simple cutting, filtering and encoding, released under the GNU GPL. The current version is 2.8.1 for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Not every video job needs a full editing suite. When you just want to cut a few seconds off the start of a recording, remove a section in the middle or convert a clip into another codec, Avidemux keeps things simple.
What Avidemux is for
- Cutting: Mark a start and an end point and remove or keep the section between them.
- Filtering: Apply filters to resize, crop or deinterlace video, among others.
- Encoding: Re-encode the video and audio into another format using a variety of codecs.
- Automation: Projects, a job queue and scripting let you repeat tasks without clicking through them again.
It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD-compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF.
Download and install
- The Download button opens the official download page.
- Windows: Choose the 64-bit installer. The download page says the installer contains no toolbars or spyware.
- macOS: A DMG built for macOS Monterey is provided.
- Linux: Use the universal AppImage (or the legacy one for older systems) and make it executable before running it. Ubuntu and Debian users can also use the package sources mentioned on the page.
Troubleshooting and updates
If the Windows version crashes after loading a video, the download page advises turning off OpenGL in the preferences. The project also asks that its binaries are redistributed only as they are, so download them from the official page rather than from repackaged bundles.
Avidemux has not had a new stable release for some time, but version 2.8.1 remains the one the project offers for download.
Pros
- Simple cutting, filtering and encoding
- Job queue and scripting
- No bundled toolbars or adware
Cons
- The latest stable release is a few years old
- The interface looks old-fashioned
