Ahrefs SEO Toolbar is a Chrome extension from Ahrefs. Its core tools (on-page SEO data, link analysis, redirect tracing and country-specific search) are free; Ahrefs metrics such as traffic and referring domains need an Ahrefs subscription.

2 min read

The Ahrefs SEO Toolbar has two layers: a set of free tools that anyone can use, and Ahrefs data that appears when you connect a paid account.

Free tools

The Chrome Web Store listing states that the core tools of the extension remain completely free. They include:

  • On-page SEO data in one click: titles, descriptions, headings and other on-page elements.
  • Link analysis: a look at the links on the current page, useful for spotting broken ones.
  • Redirect tracer with HTTP headers, according to Ahrefs’ help centre.
  • Global SEO research: view search results as they appear in another country, without a VPN.

What needs a subscription

The listing is clear that an Ahrefs subscription is required for access to Ahrefs metrics: domain and page data such as keyword counts, traffic estimates and referring domains. Without a subscription you still get the free tools.

The developer has disclosed that it will not collect or use your data.

Installing it

  1. The Download button opens the official Ahrefs SEO Toolbar listing on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to Chrome and confirm.
  3. Use it as it is, or sign in to your Ahrefs account to see subscriber metrics.

Ahrefs also offers the toolbar for Firefox and Safari.

Who it helps

Site owners checking their own pages, writers looking at competitors’ headings, and SEO teams that already pay for Ahrefs. For another free authority score, see MozBar. For a developer-focused page inspector, try the Web Developer extension.

Pros

  • Free on-page report and link analysis
  • Country-specific search results without a VPN
  • No data collection declared on its store listing

Cons

  • Ahrefs metrics require a paid subscription
  • Most useful for existing Ahrefs customers
